THE TRAIN FROM RADEGAST TO AUSCHWITZ-
-BIRKENAU

for symphony orchestra and electronics

"The train from Radegast to Auschwitz--Birkenau" is part of the collective composition "Tram No. 8", which was premiered during the 2nd Conference of Young Scientists and Artists at the Academy of Music in Łódź. In our assumption, each of the seven compositions was to refer in some way to the history and places of the city of Łódź - the place where we studied.

The pieces were connected by a bridge by Maciek Tobera (music) and Agata Michorowska (visuals). My piece refers to the tragic history of Jewish extermination by Nazi Germans. Before the Second World War Lódź was a multicultural city, where Jews constituted a large part of the society. From Radegast (now a district of Łódź "Radogoszcz"), people were deported to the concentration camps, where most of them died or were killed. Radegast's movement is followed by a deformed fragment of the Mazurka in A minor,
Op. Chopin's 17 No. 4 performed by Arthur Rubinstein - one of the most outstanding Polish-Jewish artists from Łódź.
